Plant Care

Here are some care tips for growing this beautiful plant:

Light
Place your Song of India in bright, indirect sunlight for at least four hours per day. This will keep its foliage vibrant. However, avoid too much direct sun, as it can cause leaf scorch.

Water
Keep the soil moist but not soaked during spring and fall. Reduce watering in winter. Be cautious not to overwater, as this plant is susceptible to root rot. Also, consider using bottled or purified water to avoid fluoride damage.

Soil:
Song of India isn’t very particular about soil. A peaty, well-drained potting mix works well. If you notice the soil decomposing too quickly due to excess peat, consider repotting the plant once a year in spring.

Temperature:

Maintain room temperatures between 65 to 75 degrees Fahrenheit. Avoid cold drafts, as Song of India doesn’t tolerate low temperatures well.

Humidity

Level: It prefers higher humidity levels.

Feeding

Feed your plant bi-weekly during spring and summer with a water-soluble 10-10-10 fertilizer (diluted by half). No feeding is necessary during winter.

Propagation

Take 3-5 inch stem tip cuttings from a healthy plant during spring, dip cut end in rooting hormone, then plant the cutting in a container with houseplant potting mix. Mist soil and place in a shady location until new shoots develop.

  • Pruning: Remove dead or damaged leaves as needed to maintain the plant’s appearance and health.

  • Pests: Watch for common pests such as mealybugs and scale. Treat infestations promptly with appropriate methods, such as insecticidal soap or neem oil.

  • Safety: Toxic to animals
