Plant Care

By following this care guide, your Plumeria will thrive, producing lush foliage and an abundance of beautiful, fragrant flowers. Enjoy the tropical beauty of this stunning plant!

Light

  • Outdoor: Plumerias thrive in full sun. They need at least 6-8 hours of direct sunlight each day to produce abundant flowers.

  • Indoor: If grown indoors, place your Plumeria near a bright window where it can receive as much sunlight as possible. A south-facing window is ideal. Consider using a grow light if natural sunlight is insufficient.

Water

  • Growing Season (Spring and Summer): Water Plumerias deeply but allow the soil to dry out between watering sessions. Typically, watering once a week is sufficient, but this can vary depending on the climate and soil conditions.

  • Dormant Season (Fall and Winter): Reduce watering significantly during the dormant season. Water just enough to prevent the soil from completely drying out and the plant from shriveling. Overwatering during dormancy can lead to root rot.

Soil

  • Use well-draining soil to prevent waterlogging. A cactus or succulent mix works well. You can also create your own mix by combining potting soil with sand or perlite to improve drainage.

Temperature

  • Plumerias prefer warm temperatures between 65-80°F (18-27°C). They are sensitive to cold and should be protected from temperatures below 50°F (10°C). If you live in a cooler climate, consider growing Plumerias in pots so they can be moved indoors during the winter.

Humidity

  • Plumerias enjoy moderate humidity but are fairly adaptable. Average household humidity levels are usually sufficient if grown indoors.

Fertilization

  • Fertilize Plumerias during the growing season with a high-phosphorus fertilizer to encourage blooming. Apply fertilizer every 2-3 weeks. Avoid fertilizing during the dormant season.

Pruning and Maintenance

  • Prune Plumerias in late winter or early spring before new growth begins. Remove any dead or damaged branches to maintain the plant’s shape and promote healthy growth.

  • Deadhead spent flowers to encourage more blooms.

Pests and Diseases

  • Plumerias are generally resistant to pests but can occasionally be affected by spider mites, mealybugs, and aphids. Treat infestations with insecticidal soap or neem oil.

  • Watch for signs of rust, a fungal disease that causes orange spots on the leaves. Remove affected leaves and treat with a fungicide if necessary

Repotting

  • Repot your Plumeria every 2-3 years or when it outgrows its container. Choose a pot that is slightly larger than the previous one and ensure it has drainage holes. Refresh the soil to provide the plant with new nutrients.

Propagation

  • Propagate Plumerias from cuttings. Take a 12-18 inch cutting from a healthy branch and allow the cut end to dry and callous over for a week. Plant the cutting in well-draining soil and water sparingly until roots develop, which usually takes a few weeks.

Additional Tips

  • Support: Larger Plumerias may need staking to support their weight, especially when grown in containers.

  • Fragrance: The flowers of Plumerias are highly fragrant and come in various colors, making them a delightful addition to any garden or home.
